BED BUG CONTROL
Simply spraying for bed bugs rarely eliminates the problem.  A four-step approach is needed, along with hard work, to bring these pests under control.
1.  Residual spray for baseboards and other such areas will help to kill the pests in areas where they travel between hiding places and their food source.
2.  Intensive crack and crevice work (with a good dust or aerosol) is needed to kill the majority of the bed bugs where they hide and live.
3.  Spraying or treating mattresses and other sensitive areas requires products labeled for such work.
4.  Protect beds and mattresses from bed bugs with bed bug mattress encasements.
Insecticide Concentrates for Bed Bug Control Low odor and odorless insecticide concentrates for spraying baseboards, flooring in areas of high bed bug traffic.  Insecticide concentrates listed are used to control a wide variety of pests both in and around homes and business.  A standard pump-type garden sprayer or professional stainless steel sprayer can be used to apply these products.
FenvaStar EcoCap is approved for use in NY.
Only treat mattresses with products labeled for killing bed bugs on mattresses.
Transport Mikron,  Temprid , Zenprox D-Fense SC, FenvaStar EcoCap, are concentrates that have such a label.  Read and follow lablel instructions.
[Mattresses and box springs sealed with Mattress Safe Encasements do not need to be treated.]
**For best results (especially in motels, hotels, apartment complexes or other multiple family dwellings) rotate betweenTransport Mikron and either Temprid or Zenprox.
Transport Mikron is giving the best results for bedbugs, especially bugs that are resistant to pyrethroid insecticides.  Rotating insecticides will help fight resistant problems.**

TIP:  Always use up a mixed solution the same day it is mixed!  (Ever wonder why ready-mixed grocery store insecticides do no work very well?)  Water is a necessary vehicle for transferring or applying liquid insecticides to various surfaces, but insecticides do not sit well in water for extended times.  An insecticide that is mixed and allowed to "sit" in a sprayer will begin to break down in a matter of hours.
Pesticides will eventually cause gaskets and valves to break down over time, especially when sprayers are not emptied and cleaned after every use.
Dusts Used in Bed Bug Control Bed bugs usually hide in areas where sprays cannot reach.  Insecticide dusts are for use in cracks, crevices and other hiding places where most sprays cannot reach.  Dusting these hiding places is the one job that most people avoid -- because it is not as easy as spraying.
Treatments for bed bug control that do not include crack and crevice dust applications usually fail.
Although several aerosols are labeled for crack & crevice work, aerosols never give the long residual found with proper dust applications.  Where aerosols usually do not last longer than 8 to 10 days, dusts will last for several weeks.  IN HIGH INSECT ACTIVITY AREAS, LARGE NUMBERS OF BUGS WILL EVENTUALLY RUB OFF MOST OF YOUR DUST.  In these high-traffic areas, a repeat application may be necessary.  This second application should be made 7 to 10 days after initial treatment.
Once the bed bug population has been greatly reduced, the insecticide dust will last for several weeks.
Most insect dusts are packaged in soft bottles that allow for application straight from original package.
However, a hand bellows duster (such as Crusader Duster, J. T. Eatons Duster) will greatly enhance the job.
Dusters allow for better penetration into voids, cracks and crevices and also give dust particles a static charge for greater residual.
All of our pest control kits that contain a dust will also contain a duster.  Dusters are that important.
Bed Bug Insect Growth Regulators

Adult bed bugs that come into contact with Gentrol products will become incapable of reproducing.
Gentrol IGR (active ingredient: Hydroprene) is available in concentrate which is mixed for spray or fog, aerosol for crack and crevices and in solid dispensers (Gentrol Point Source) to use in areas that cannot be sprayed.
Apply Gentrol diluted spray solution using either a pressurized spray system (hand held pump type sprayer) capable of delivering a pinpoint or variable spray pattern or a device capable of coating evenly. Make crack and crevice applications directly to areas such as crevices, baseboards, floors, ceilings, or walls.
Make spot treatments to areas such as storage areas, closets, around water pipes, doors, windows, and behind and under appliances, equipment, furniture and beds.
To treat for bedbugs, apply to harborage points mentioned above.
In addition: under beds, bottom side of box springs (do not treat linens and mattresses), under and behind night stands, to points where carpet and wall meet, cracks in cove base, molding, and other areas where bedbugs harborage.
Gentrol Aerosol is sprayed into cracks & crevices listed above.

Insecticide Aerosols for Bed Bug Control Most of these aerosols contain an insecticide for killing insects, including bed bugs.  One aerosol (Gentrol) does not contain a contact insecticide, but does dispense an insect growth regulator that prevents adult bedbugs from reproducing.

Keep Bed Bugs From Infesting Mattresses and Box Springs

Covers and seals mattresses and box springs to prevent bed bugs infesting mattresses and box springs as well as preventing existing bugs from escaping mattress.  If they cannot escape, they cannot relocate to other parts of your house and they cannot come out at night to feed and bite.
Makes inspection easier: Mattress and boxsprings provide many places for bugs to hide.
The Mattress Safe Encasement gives a smooth surface that is easier to inspect than the original surface of your mattress.  This smooth surface makes any bed bug sign easier to locate.  These signs include tiny blood spots, bedbug exrement and casings, as well as bed bugs.
